The inscription reads: Sacred to the memory of John Charlesworth, of the S S Sherwood Foresters, accidentally drowned in the Shannon on the 16th May 1916 while Battalion was stationed at Killaloe. “The Gift of God’s eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Williams Headstone, Bunratty Graveyard. Inscription reads: To the memory of | 4179390 Private | R. W. Williams | Royal Welch Fusiliers | 10th July 1921 | + | who was killed at Bunratty Bridge | and later buried | near the bridge | but whose grave is now lost | Their Glory Shall Not | be blotted out. [Grave No. 106]. Private Williams was the last British soldier killed in Clare during the War of Independence.
"On 10th July the Mid-Clare Brigade assassinated Alfred Needham, a twenty-one-year old Black and Tan from London, on O’Connell Street, Ennis. He had married a young woman in the town that morning. At 2 p.m. that day two motorcycle despatch riders from the 2nd battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers were crossing Bunratty Bridge from the Limerick direction when part of the structure, sabotaged by the IRA the previous night, collapsed. Private R. W. Williams was plunged into the river below and drowned. His body was swept away and was not recovered until weeks later when it was washed up on the eastern bank of the river; he was buried by a local farmer who had witnessed the incident."

He was the author of "The Diary of Colour-Sergeant George Calladine, 19th Foot, 1793-1837" where he writes that these two children died of measles.]
